The History of Fashion in Manchester


In 1781, the world’s first steam driven textile mill was set up in Manchester and the city began to expand their large-scale factories and warehouses.

Manchester was soon after declared the “Cottonopolis” in 1870 as they began to produce over 80% of the world’s imported cloth.

In mid 1970s, the Manchester Arndale was built as the first “American-style” mall to be built in the United Kingdom.

Nowadays, Manchester is no longer famous for their producing and trading of textiles however has a reputation for a large player in world’s fashion scene.
The Norther Quarter is famous for their independent fashion stores and vintage shopping.
